The child star who goes off the rails and squanders their talent in the flurry of partying and bad decisions is an all too familiar trope these days.
But as much as we’ve come to expect it from performers who were thrust into the national spotlight several years before their brains fully developed, it still came as something of a shock when it happened to Amanda Bynes.
Even in the early days of her career, Bynes possessed a maturity and self-awareness one rarely finds in performers of any age.
But a combination of mental health and substance abuse quickly brought her career to a screeching halt — and the press that once praised her unique talents and emminently likable onscreen persona now reveled in reporting the latest updates on her harrowing downfall.
Back in 2014, Bynes hit rock bottom in a big way.
She threatened to kill her parents in one of the drug-fueled social media meltdowns that had become sadly common to her at that point.
Shortly thereafter, Bynes was arrested for DUI after allegedly losing consciousness at an intersection.
As a result of her increasingly erratic behavior, Bynes was placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold and eventually hospitalized.
Her recovery process was slow and painful — as these things always are — but in June of 2017, something miraculoud happened.
Bynes gave her first interview in years, and in her conversation with Paper magazine — which quickly went viral — she was poised, apologetic, self-deprecating and witty.
In short, she demonstrated all of the qualities that fans loved about her in her heyday.
Unfortunately, the comeback was short-lived.
Bynes went back to rehab in March of 2019, and according to a new report from Yahoo News, she’s spent most of the year in treatment.
“She’s not doing well,” a source tells the outlet, adding that Amanda’s return to the spotlight in 2017 was “too much, too soon.”
Due to a conservatorship, Bynes parents’ are essentially in control of her life, and it’s likely up to them to decide when and if she’ll be permitted to leave treatment.
The facility she resides in currently has been a described as a sober living house, and it seems the 33-year-old is not happy with her surroundings.
Prior to her most recent relapse, Bynes graduated from fashion school, and her loved ones reportedly hope that she’ll find a career far from the pressures of Hollywood once she’s released.
