Ant and Dec: ‘He’s got a taste for it’ ITV duo open up about Simon Cowell’s big change

Ant McPartlin, 44, and Dec Donnelly, 44, will be back on our screens hosting Britain’s Got Talent this Saturday, as we welcome back the award-winning series for the 14th time. They’ll be joined by Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams as they return to the panel to preside over the best talent Britain has to offer, all who are wanting to secure a place in the live-semi finals taking place later this year.

Up until a few years ago you’d never get Simon up on stage, now he’s done it a couple of times. I think he’s got a taste for it now!

The audition process kicks off this weekend to find the most talented people across the nation despite the worrying times ahead.

Many are hoping the pre-recorded auditions, that were filmed across the country in January and February, will provide that much-needed comedy influx we’re desperate for at times like this.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s debut, the iconic TV presenters opened up about life on set, the upcoming acts and the judges – revealing they’ve noticed a big change in boss Simon.

Famous for being stern-faced, over-critical and always earning a significant amount of boos from the audience, the music mogul seems to have softened over the years – we now see him crack a smile more often than the sun shines!

Dropping the mean-girl act, he appears to have become more tolerant over the 13 years the show has been running.

And proving our theory right, Ant and Dec agreed he now does one thing that he never used to do on the show. Ever.

Donning this unappeasable trait, Simon never liked to be involved in the acts themselves, whatever they were.

Quite happy (well… sometimes) to sit safely on the panel and watch from a distance, getting involved never used to be something he wished to do.

But times are changing, it seems.

The boys divulged what’s in store for fans this year and among the eye-popping talent, a motorcyclist will give David the fright of his life up on stage.

“That was good because we spoke to David afterwards and the guy on the motorbike was really winding him up, revving it next to his head and edging back into his privates, taunting him a bit, which was fun! I liked him!” Ant giggled.

Dec agreed: “He was great! And it’s nice to have a bit of danger, it makes it even better when one of the judges are involved!”

Ant let slip that the judges are always “scared” when they’re called up on stage incase something goes wrong.

Dec continued: “Up until a few years ago you’d never get Simon up on stage, now he’s done it a couple of times.

“I think he’s got a taste for it now!”

There were rumours the talent extravaganza would be called off due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic, but the perks of pre-recording the first half worked a treat.

“People’s whole worlds are just collapsing, but those of us who can have to carry on doing what we do. What’s the alternative?

“Hopefully BGT will be a bit of medicine for the whole country. I mean that. We need to just connect, to hear other people’s stories, laugh, cry, all those human things that BGT has always been about.”
