John Legend has said seeing Chrissy Teigen become a mother and battle postpartum depression ‘deepened and strengthened’ their relationship.
The couple have been married for six years and together for 12, and they are parents to their gorgeous kids Luna, three, and one-year-old Miles.
However, after welcoming Luna in 2016, Chrissy, 33, was diagnosed with postpartum depression after suffering physical pain, exhaustion and ‘spontaneous crying’.
And John, 40, has said that he saw different sides to his wife during this time.
Speaking to People, the newly crowned Sexiest Man Alive said: ‘[Parenthood] deepens your love for your partner because you see them in a different light going through, in our case, the trouble of actually having a kid.
‘Then Chrissy’s going through postpartum depression. You just see different sides of that person, and if you go through it and you learn from it and you come out the other end better for it, then it deepens and strengthens your relationship.’
In 2017, Chrissy wrote an op-ed for Glamour magazine in which she revealed she had been battling postpartum depression after welcoming her daughter.
The model wrote: ‘When I wasn’t in the studio, I never left the house. I mean, never. Not even a tiptoe outside. I’d ask people who came inside why they were wet. Was it raining? How would I know—I had every shade closed. Most days were spent on the exact same spot on the couch and rarely would I muster up the energy to make it upstairs for bed.
‘John would sleep on the couch with me, sometimes four nights in a row. I started keeping robes and comfy clothes in the pantry so I wouldn’t have to go upstairs when John went to work. There was a lot of spontaneous crying.’
After her diagnosis, the food writer went on to take antidepressants and go to therapy.
John and Chrissy conceived both of their children through IVF, and Luna and Miles seem to be carbon copies of their mum and dad respectively.
The All of Me singer admitted to People that Luna ‘is so much like Chrissy it’s uncanny’, adding that she ‘has a sense of actual comedy’.
However, little Miles is a bit more ‘mellow’ like his father.
We love this family.
