EastEnders fans delighted as Rita Simons and Samantha Womack reunite for birthday party

EastEnders stars Rita Simons and her on-screen sister Samantha Womack have left fans feeling nostalgic as they met for a fun evening of birthday celebrations on Sunday 8 March.

Rita, who played Roxy Mitchell on the BBC soap, took to her Instagram and Twitter feeds to share a sweet photo of herself with Samantha, 47, who played Roxy's sister Ronnie, alongside actress Rebecca McKinnis.

The actress, who was out in Soho to celebrate her birthday with friends, captioned the snap: "These girls," followed by a red heart emoji.

Fans couldn't help but gush over the reunion as many felt nostalgic for the days they used to regularly appear on EastEnders together.

Rita and Samantha, who also got together last year to discuss their next joint acting projects, played the sisters for 16 years before being written out of the show.

The producer of the show at the time, Sean O'Connor had given the characters a dramatic ending, which was a huge shock to fans everywhere.

In the final heart-wrenching scenes of the characters' lives, a heavily intoxicated Roxy fell into a closed swimming pool in a hotel where her sister Ronnie's wedding reception was held.

Together with Ronnie's new husband Jack Branning, who's played by Scott Maslen, viewers of the soap were left heartbroken.
