Precious cargo! Elton John steps off a private jet STILL carrying his Golden Globe statuette after winning Best Original Song – as he resumes his farewell tour in Sydney

Elton John and his songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, won Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

And as the 72-year-old returned to Sydney on Tuesday to resume his Australian tour, he did not let the trophy out of his sight while carrying it off his private jet.

The Candle in the Wind star carefully stepped off the plane while holding the statuette in one hand and tightly clutching the handrail with the other.

Elton immediately flew to Australia after the Golden Globes to resume his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. His next show is scheduled for Thursday at Sydney’s 21,000-seat Qudos Bank Arena.

He had kicked off his tour Down Under at HBF Park in Perth on November 30, and will perform his final show at Bankwest Stadium on March 3.

The star enjoyed a well-deserved break over Christmas with his husband, David Furnish, 57, and their sons, Elijah, six, and Zachary, nine, while in Sydney.

On Sunday, Elton and lyricist Bernie won Best Original Song for I’m Gonna Love Me Again, which they had written for Rocketman, a biopic about Elton starring Taron Egerton as the flamboyant singer.

While Elton has won five Emmys, a Golden Globe and several other awards, this is the first big win he has shared with Bernie.

‘This is really sweet because this is not just about a song we wrote for a movie which deals with our relationship,’ Bernie began in the duo’s speech.

‘It’s a relationship that doesn’t happen too much in this town. It’s a 52-year old marriage. So thank you.’

Elton then thanked ‘all [his] fellow nominees, who are all great songwriters’.

He added: ‘It’s very humbling, and to the Hollywood Foreign Press, to everybody who worked on Rocketman, to Giles Martin, who made the record, to Taron who helped me sing it.

‘To win this… this is the first award I’ve won with him [Bernie]. Ever. We never won a Grammy, we never did anything together except for this, I’m so happy, thank you so much.’

Taron also won Best Actor at the ceremony for his portrayal of Elton.

Richly deserved: While Elton has won five Emmys, a Golden Globe and several other awards, this is the first big win he has shared with Bernie, his lyricist of 52 years
