Dominic Brunt, 52, has been a TV favourite for years thanks to his portrayal of Emmerdale’s lovable vet, Paddy Kirk. As the soap surpasses its 50th anniversary, with Dominic having held his role for more than 25 years, the actor shared the “strange” way the soap has changed and how it might be different to other TV shows.
Dominic says he has noticed the change even more since he was challenged with even more emotional scenes amid Paddy and Chas’ marriage breakdown following her affair.
He said: “Paddy is not [having a great time at the minute], but I think it’s strange with Emmerdale, the kind of maturing and moving on from what it was before.
“It has been really good to be given these storylines because I was always like the light-hearted character.
“I think what Emmerdale has become, it would have been very easy to leave some of the regulars behind as being what Emmerdale was then.
“So, we have been really lucky to continue to be written for.”
As for what is to come, Dominic says it will get “even more emotional” for Paddy and Chas.
He continued: “I don’t actually know whether we get back together or whether we stay split up, but I know it is going to be a bit of a messy falling.
“It is as it happens in real life with custody battles and accommodation and financial things.
“But I think what Emmerdale does very well is the pace of things and injecting humour into it. So, it won’t be a misery-fest, it will be interesting whatever happens.”
It comes as Dominic and his wife Joanne Mitchell – who previously played Sandra Flaherty in the soap – have collaborated on their latest horror film, Wolf Manor.
The film sees a werewolf terrorise a fictional cast and crew of a British horror film, killing them off one by one.
With Dominic as director and Joanne as producer, the film includes a performance from The Vicar of Dibley and Four Weddings and a Funeral star James Fleet.

The impressive special effects were created by Shaune Harrison who is best known for his work on the Harry Potter films, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Mummy and Avengers: Age of Ultron, to name a few.
Discussing his new film, Dominic said: “This is the first film that we’ve done with werewolves or anything like that which was really good fun. It’s the perfect pizza movie.
“The special effects are there, there is plenty of blood and tension and jumps, but it’s not horrific, it’s not the sort of thing that is going to put you off your dinner or anything…hopefully!”
So far, Wolf Manor has also had a good reception since it premiered at FrightFest and has been screened at various film festivals across the country.
The Guardian described it as “cheerfully silly” while Voices from the Balcony said it “maintained suspense despite attempts at humour”.
