Loose Women: Gail Porter shows off her new wig
Gail Porter’s life has been plagued by insomnia since she was three or four years old, and she now loses entire days due to the condition.
The 52-year-old stand-up comedian, who was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder back in 2011, told all about her mental health in a candid new interview.
“Sometimes I’m so tired I sleep for 48 hours. I wake up when it’s dark and realise I’ve lost a day,” she despaired to the Sunday Times Magazine.
“I have terrible insomnia — I’m up at 1am, 3am, 5am. I’m a worrier,” she continued.
Listing thoughts that run through her head in the early hours, Gail stated: “Will I get work after Edinburgh? Have I messaged my friends enough? Is Ziggy going to like the cat-sitter?”

The Scottish star, who has dabbled in TV presenting, acting and modelling during the course of her career, also spoke of living with anxiety and anorexia.
“I’d always had eating problems… I flew from job to job ‘forgetting to eat’ and it spiralled quickly,” she explained.
Today however, she is currently enjoying a successful career in stand-up comedy, with the support of her 20-year-old daughter Honey, and she will be performing at the Edinburgh Assembly Rooms seven nights a week until August 28.
The work seems to have boosted her mental health, with the star revealing she is “super excited” about her stint.

Career hasn’t always been easy for Gail, who says she suddenly found herself on the periphery of the TV world back in the 2000s after a bout of alopecia drastically changed her looks.
“My hair fell out, nobody wanted to touch me with a barge pole,” she told Sky News.
“I didn’t want to wear a wig because I find them uncomfortable. And then suddenly the only jobs you’re getting offered are to go on and talk about being bald.”
The star later went on to suffer a mental health breakdown, and was sectioned after sending her boyfriend a text message telling him: “I can’t carry on. I feel suicidal.”
Speaking on Loose Women afterwards, she revealed all about what it was like to live under constant surveillance in a hospital.
“When I was sectioned, they just didn’t know what to do with me. Because I was so depressed, they medicated me in the morning and evening,” she stated.
“I was there for about 14 or 15 days and never saw a doctor once while I was there until I left.”
Gail, who appeared in Celebrity Big Brother in 2015, also battled homelessness at one stage.
