Television presenter Helen Skelton has spoken out about social media trolling after sparking backlash from some viewers by wearing short dresses. The Countryfile star admits that she has no time to dwell on the abuse she receives on social media.

I know it sounds stupid but I don’t have time for that.

Helen, 37, was at the centre of backlash after she presented during the swimming competitions at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

The Cumbria-born presenter fronted the BBC coverage while wearing a short dress that stopped mid-thigh, which also boasted a daring cleavage split.

While some were left enraged by Helen’s outfit choice, she has since admitted that social media abuse now goes over her head.

However, she does admit to sometimes questioning what she should post on her social media channels.

In a new interview, Helen addressed trolling, saying: “Maybe I’m too needy but no I don’t [worry], I know it sounds stupid but I don’t have time for that.”

She added: “I’ll maybe put a picture on but I don’t have time to go through the comments — don’t get me wrong I love social media, but I don’t get too hung up on comments because I don’t think the whole world is reflected on social media.”

The Summer on the Farm star explained to The Sun: “It doesn’t bother me what some random person I’m never going to meet thinks about my skirt!”

While Helen isn’t affected by trolls, she revealed that she often thinks carefully about what aspects of her personal life she shares on social media.

“I think everybody wrestles with the Insta thing, I mean I regularly think ‘Oh I’m not going to put pictures of the kids on’ but then I just really like that picture so I put it on,” she explained.

Helen has previously admitted to not searching for herself on search engines such as Google after “reading too much into herself”.

The presenter was left gobsmacked when she discovered her “northern dairy farmer” dad was a guest on This Morning, discussing her wardrobe choice at the Olympics.

At the time, Helen told the MailOnline: “I get more press and headlines about a pair of shorts than anything else I’ve done, it’s just funny.”

Last month, Helen revealed to Express.co.uk that it would be “difficult to say no” to Strictly Come Dancing.

After appearing on the 2012 Christmas special edition of Strictly alongside professional dancer, Artem Chigvintsev, she said: “It’s one of those shows I think that is such a, you know, in terms of a telly gig, it’s the biggest and the best.

“[It has] a fantastic make-up team, a fantastic costume team and a fantastic lighting team.”

Helen continued: “I think anybody who works in telly would find it very difficult how to say no to it.”

Despite her hint, Helen appears to be fully booked up.

She explained: “I’m in the middle of filming two series for Channel Four and this live series for Channel Five and I’ve got this National Grid podcast starting next which is 12 months of me kind of exploring the nation’s clean and green energy.

“To be honest, I’m chock-a-block full at the minute and I’m kind of really excited about the podcast.”

Discussing the podcast that has seen her become a judge for National Grid’s Voices for a Green future competition, she said: “It’s not something I’ve ever wanted to do before, but when National Grid approached me about doing this, I was like ‘yeah, I mean that’s kind of a bit different’.

“It’s a chance to kind of really get out and find out about how many green energy sources you know this country is already using, we’ve come so far in terms of moving away from fossil fuels and I don’t think people realise it.”
