Homer Simpson hosts the Emmys in the awards’ most bizarre opening ever

Many weren't happy when the Emmys decided to run without a host for the first time in its history.

But there was even more eyebrows raised when one did finally turn up – Homer Simpson!

Bosses went with a cartoon version but he didn't hang around for too long thanks to the Simpson's star's untimely on-stage demise.

“Thank you, Thank you. For those of you out there who are without hope, this has been my impossible dream," he said as he took the applause.

"If it can happen to me, then you……”

Then Homer was suddenly squashed by a falling piano onstage.

It got plenty of laughs but many felt the lack of a host held the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards back.

One viewer wrote on twitter: "Homer is always good but no real host just doesn't work."

Another posted: "Hey Emmys, the show sucked. Find a host for next year and cancel the dude in the booth talking nonsense no one wants to hear."

It was a great night for the Brits as the biggest names in the TV industry flocked to the Microsoft Theater in LA.

Game of Thrones led the way by winning Drama Series – with Peter Dinklage picking up the Outstanding Supporting Actor award – but Kit Harrington and Emilia Clarke lost out for Lead Actor and Actress.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge won an amazing three awards for Comedy Actress, Comedy Series Writing and Comedy series for Fleabag- and her Killing Eve pal Jodie Comer won Lead Drama Actress.
