Actor Idris Elba announced in a Tweet on Monday that he’s tested positive for the coronavirus, joining a worldwide number rapidly approaching 180,000 others. Elba is the latest celebrity to announce his positive test, following the revelations of Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, and others in the last week.
“I got some test results back for coronavirus, and it came back positive,” he said in the video shared to his Twitter feed. “Yeah, and it sucks. Listen, I’m doing OK.”
Elba goes on to reveal in the video that his wife, model Sabrina Dhowre Elba hasn’t been tested, and that she’s “doing OK.”
The Hobbs and Shaw and The Wire star said that he wasn’t feeling any symptoms, and that he got tested because he realized that he had come into contact with someone who had tested positive. He says he quarantined himself immediately upon learning that the other person had tested positive, and got his positive test result back earlier today.
“This is serious. Now’s the time to really think about social distancing, washing your hands,” he said. “Beyond that, there are people out there who aren’t showing symptoms, and that can easily spread it.”
Elba last appeared in Cats, and recently wrapped filming James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which is scheduled for release in 2021. Elba was named People‘s Sexiest Man Alive in 2018 and also is an occasional DJ (he performed at last year’s Coachella).
This morning I tested positive for Covid 19. I feel ok, I have no symptoms so far but have been isolated since I found out about my possible exposure to the virus. Stay home people and be pragmatic. I will keep you updated on how I’m doing 👊🏾👊🏾 No panic. pic.twitter.com/Lg7HVMZglZ
“We live in a divided world right now, we can all feel it, it’s been bullshit,” he said. “But now’s the time for solidarity. Now’s the time for thinking about each other.”
Elba ended his video on a positive note. “Stay positive, and don’t freak out,” he said.
