After about two years of dating, Outlander star Caitríona Balfe announced that she was engaged to McGill at the Golden Globes in 2018, where she was nominated for Best Television Actress in a Drama Series.
The following summer, the couple hosted a small private wedding ceremony in the UK, however, no photos have been shared with the public from the affair.
On August 21, 2021, the couple shared they had a son, which similar to her engagement came as a surprise to fans after keeping her pregnancy private from the public.
Balfe, who almost didn’t play Claire Fraser, wrote on Instagram: “We are so grateful for this little soul…that he chose us as his parents.
“I’m in awe of him already and can’t help stare and wonder at all the possibilities of who he will become, where he will go and what he’ll do on the big adventure of his life.”

The couple have not shared any information about or pictures of their son. Balfe told Vanity Fair in 2022: “When you have a kid, you become really protective. I don’t want those crazies—because that’s what they are—I just don’t want them talking about him.”
The ‘crazies’ in question are group of extreme fans who have created and spread outlandish rumors regarding the actress’ family. The main culprits are claims that the two aren’t married, fueled by fans’ fantasies of Balfe coupling up with costar Sam Heughan, and that Heughan is the real father of her son.
The actors have tried to shut down the theories, however, fans haven’t relented. Balfe said: “It’s sad, because you meet the loveliest people who are fans of the show, and they’re super supportive and they do the nicest things—and then you have that little thing, which just taints it.”
