Quarantine coping mechanisms vary from person to person. Some may cope through Animal Crossing, while others find relief with TikTok dance challenges. For Jake Gyllenhaal, his self-isolation just got a whole lot more romantic, as he’s sparked up a blooming relationship with everybody’s end-of-the-world loaf of choice: sourdough.
“Shh, I have sourdough rising,” the actor began his virtual appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “Shh. It needs to rest. It’s resting.”
“Have you fallen into the sourdough cult?” Colbert retorted. “Because that is something that’s obsessing a lot of people right now.”
Gyllenhaal explained his fall from store-bought bread eloquently. “As my hair has grown longer, and as I’ve sort of slowly inched into the hipster world, I’ve found myself falling in love with sourdough.”
He also recalled how his friend, who owns a bakery in San Francisco, helped him get started. “We were talking, and I hate this, but I was like, ‘Can you teach me how to do a sourdough starter?'” he said. “And off I went.”
Gyllenhaal continued to exchange tips and anecdotes about his sourdough starter with Colbert for a substantial amount of time, because, literally, what else is there to talk about during a pandemic?
At one point, Colbert said, “I have no idea what motivates people to watch television anymore, so it’s possible that this conversation right now is either getting Super Bowl ratings or people are scrambling for the remote right now to click over to anything else.”
Gyllenhaal added, “There’s a very particular kind of audience who’s definitely into this.”
