Kate Garraway is ‘hoping for a miracle’ and wants husband Derek to ‘break through’ in recovery from coronavirus battle

Kate Garraway is "hoping for a miracle" in her husband Derek Draper's recovery, Susanna Reid has revealed.

The 53 year old recently opened up on her partner's condition as she told her Good Morning Britain co-stars Susanna and Piers Morgan that while her husband has beaten coronavirus, the deadly bug "attacked everything".

Writing in her Daily Mail column, 49 year old Susanna has now praised the presenter for having the strength to talk about her husband, 52, on live TV.

"Watching my friend Kate Garraway describing her husband Derek Draper’s condition on Good Morning Britain was heartbreaking," she wrote.

"She has such strength even to be able to put into words what she and their children are going through."

Susanna, who recently fought back tears as she spoke about Kate's other half's health on GMB, continued: "Derek… has been in intensive care for almost three months after contracting Covid-19 in March.

"Kate is hoping for a miracle in his recovery and for him to break through…

"After her moving interview, so many people got in touch with Good Morning Britain to send their support. They were moved to tears at her anguish, but inspired by her courage.

"Derek is a strong, clever, insightful man devoted to his gorgeous wife and children. Kate feels stronger just by knowing that all our support is there."

Soon after Derek was admitted to hospital earlier this year, he was put into an induced coma by doctors to help him fight off the coronavirus.

The author has since been taken out of the coma, but has failed to regain consciousness, leaving Kate and their kids, Darcey, 14, and Billy, ten, living in a state of "awful uncertainty", according to Loose Women star Jane Moore.

Speaking on the show, 58 year old Jane said she went to speak to Kate at her home after her appearance on GMB on Friday, 5 June.

She said: "I spent a couple of hours with her in her garden at a safe distance and did an interview with her.

"We've always known that Kate is incredibly strong and an amazing woman, but I honestly don't know how she's still standing."

Jane went on to explain that to begin with everyone thought Derek would have a similar experience to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who came out of intensive care after just three days.

She continued: "You know, Derek, he contracted coronavirus, he went to hospital. It looked initially that he might sort of have like a Boris Johnson experience and come out sort of largely unscathed.

"But it's attacked all of his vital organs. He's now COVID-free, they've brought him out of the coma, they put him into an induced coma, they brought him out of the coma and he's not regained consciousness yet.

"So every day she's [Kate is] just kind of living with this awful uncertainty and now she's talking about how, maybe, it's a new normality.

"They're preparing her, they're saying maybe the new normality is that they're never going to know whether he'll recover."
