Kate detailed the extent of her husband’s desperation while he battled coronavirus in her new memoir, titled The Power of Hope, which is being serialised in the Mail on Sunday.

The mum-of-two revealed a text which Derek sent her before he was put into an induced coma, which read: "It is second after second of being locked in a mask thinking every second you're going to die. I think they now may want to put me to sleep."

The ITV host revealed how the couple could only communicate by phone after her and their two children could not visit Derek in hospital due to the high amount of Covid cases.

She shared a number of heart-breaking texts from her husband while he was on the ward, even planning his funeral from his hospital bed.

He said: “I want you at the funeral, but I’m not sure about the children. It is unimaginable. I literally feel like I’m drowning and every breath is my last.”

Luckily the doctors confirmed that there was “no chance of [him] dying” but that his battle with the virus would be a long one.

Derek went on to thank Kate for her unwavering support during the pandemic as she remained at home to care for their two children.

He wrote: “I love you; you saved my life. And I don’t just mean now because I’m going into the coma to help me.

“I mean, everything, with the children, the family, our wonderful life. You saved me.”

Derek has now been discharged and is continuing to recover at home with wife Kate and their two children, Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11.

Just days ago, as she presented GMB, Kate gave a touching update on Derek’s progress as he noticed she was wearing a new dress as she left for work.

Kate joined Susanna Reid and Adil Ray on the hit ITV breakfast show as she discussed the heart-warming moment with viewers.

She told her co-stars: "It's a whirly gig, it's a whirly gig. No, it's been wonderful having Derek at home, and lots of little positives, I think.

"Whether those are positives because it is genuinely helping his cognition being at home or just because I'm there to see the little things, you know, whereas I couldn't go in before and we were on FaceTime and stuff, I don't know."

Revealing the moment, she continued: "But it feels positive, little moments of reaction. He actually said something the other day, I walked in the other morning just before I left to go to Smooth [Radio] to say, 'I'm off to Smooth now,' and he said, 'New dress?,' which was just amazing because it was actually."
