Kate Wright shares plans to have baby with husband Rio Ferdinand and hopes it will bring family ‘closer’

Former The Only Way Is Essex star Kate Wright has shared her plans to have a baby with her husband Rio Ferdinand, hoping a new arrival will “bring us all together”.

The 28 year old, who is stepmum to 42 year old Rio’s three children, Tate, Lorenz and Tia, opened up on the couple’s hopes to expand their brood further some day.

Speaking on Giovanna Fletcher’s Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast, she said: “I said to Rio say if we have a baby when they get to five I’m going to be great.

“I know what I’m doing but that baby stage I don’t know. The kids talk about having a baby all the time. I said ‘Rio I’ve never changed a nappy, I’ve never had children!’”

She continued: “I think [having a baby] will bring us all together, tighter, closer as a knit. It’s weird because when we’re in the house and it’s us five, I feel like their mum and I know I’m not their mum and we all feel the same. I just feel like they’re my children. It’s a normal family.

“I always thought I wanted a big family but I’d never thought think I’d get it this way. It’s just mad when I think about it. I thought I’d have a big family but with three step kids and them losing their mum I never saw it being this way.”

Kate and her husband Rio, who married in a stunning ceremony in Turkey in September, were praised on Monday 10 February when their touching documentary on becoming a blended family aired.

The former reality star left TOWIE behind in 2017 and moved in with Rio and his three children.

But, the now-married couple’s documentary revealed the difficulties of becoming a blended family as the children continue to grieve for their late-mother Rebecca Ellison, who died in 2015.

In a touching scene, Kate broke down in tears as she read out a message she wrote to Rebecca in a card as the family prepared to visit her grave.

The clip shows Kate laminating notes written by the children for Mother’s Day to be left on Rebecca’s grave.

Kate explains: “It’s Mother’s Day this weekend. The children write cards for their mum and their nan. We laminate them so that when they’re at the cemetery, they can obviously last longer rather than getting wet and damaged.

“I always write a message from me, because after all I am bringing up her children with Rio,” she adds.

Kate then reads her card to Rebecca aloud, saying: “To Rebecca, Happy Mother’s Day. We’re all thinking of you today, especially the children. I wish you were here to see how far they have come…”

Kate then breaks down in tears and is unable to continue reading. She adds: “I don’t know why it makes me so sad. I feel like I’m grieving for someone I didn’t know. It’s really weird because I’ve taken on the children and Rio’s emotion.”
