Liam Hemsworth Breaks Silence on Miley Cyrus Split: 'You Don't Know What It's Like'

Meanwhile, Miley’s still vacationing in Italy with Brody Jenner’s estranged wife.

Liam Hemsworth has spoken out for the first time since news broke he and his pop star wife, Miley Cyrus, have split after less than a year of marriage.

"You don’t understand what it’s like," the 29-year-old "Hunger Games" star told Daily Mail Australia over the weekend regarding the separation. "I don’t want to talk about it, mate."

Liam has been staying with his brother, Chris Hemsworth, at the Avenger’s Byron Bay beach house in Australia, following the breakup.

A rep for Cyrus first revealed the news in a statement to PEOPLE on Saturday.

"Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time," the statement read. "Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers."

"They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart," the statement continued. "Please respect their process and privacy."

Miley and Liam have had an on-again, off-again relationship since they first met on the set of "The Last Song" in 2009. They got engaged in 2012, broke up and got back together in 2015. The duo officially tied the knot in a secret ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee, in December of last year.

While the breakup news came as a shock to some, others suspected something was up after Miley — who’s currently on vacation in Lake Como, Italy, with sister her, Brandi Cyrus, and Brody Jenner’s recently estranged wife, Kaitlynn Carter — shared a photo where it appeared she wasn’t wearing her wedding ring.

The next day, Miley was photographed making out with Kaitlynn on their yacht, which triggered a shady social media war between Miley and Brody.

After Brody left the comment "hot girl summer" on one of Miley and Kaitlynn’s Instagram photos together, he posted a photo of his own, captioning the solo shot of him in Malibu, "Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today." His friend and co-star, Brandon Thomas Lee, commented, "Let’s round this scandal out and post a pic of us making out."

Brody replied, "Watch out! Pics of Liam and I holding hands on the beach coming soon," which didn’t sit well with Miley, who replied to the comment, "Go take a nap in your truck and cool off #hotgirlsummer."

Miley’s comment was in reference to a fight Brody had with Kaitlynn during a recent episode of "The Hills: New Beginnings." After storming off in anger, he ended up spending the night in his car.

That’s when Brody’s mom, Linda Thompson, swooped in. "Always so proud of your dignity, generosity, kindness & nobility. You are a gentleman and I love you very much. Onward," she commented on his photo, dropping a thumbs-up emoji.

Miley appeared to reference the split Sunday morning, telling her Instagram followers she wanted to let life take its path.

"Don’t fight evolution, because you will never win. Like the mountain I am standing on top of, which was once under water, connected with Africa, change is inevitable," she wrote. "The Dolomites were not created over night, it was over millions of years that this magnificent beauty was formed."

"My dad always told me ‘Nature never hurries but it is always on time,’" she continued. "It fills my heart with peace and hope KNOWING that is true. I was taught to respect the planet and its process and I am committed to doing the same with my own."

Just last month, the singer told Elle she didn’t necessarily "fit into a stereotypical wife role" and that she was still "very sexually attracted to women."

"I think it’s very confusing to people that I’m married. But my relationship is unique," she told the magazine. "And I don’t know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it’s so complex, and modern, and new that I don’t think we’re in a place where people would get it. I mean, do people really think that I’m at home in a f–king apron cooking dinner? I’m in a hetero relationship, but I still am very sexually attracted to women."

"People become vegetarian for health reasons, but bacon is still fucking good, and I know that," she added. "I made a partner decision. This is the person I feel has my back the most. I definitely don’t fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don’t even like that word."

Meanwhile, a source told PEOPLE that the couple’s split "isn’t shocking to people who are actually with them every day."

"After they reunited, everyone thought they were this ‘perfect’ couple, but they still had a lot of issues," the source said. "They’re not on the same page when it comes to a lot of fundamental things that make a relationship work. It’s not surprising at all."
