Gemma Owen has detailed how the last couple of months have been “quite challenging” for her following the death of her competition horse, Sirius Black.
The former Love Island contestant, who competed on the show last year against the likes of Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu and Davide Sanclimenti, was left heartbroken in February when Sirius died suddenly.
Sirius, who Gemma nicknamed Siz, was 17 years old at the time of his death and had been a fixture in Gemma’s life since she was 11.
She rode the Harry Potter-named horse in several competitions and scored a personal best at Prix St Georges in January 2022.
On Wednesday, the Pretty Little Thing collaborator took to YouTube, where she posted a lengthy 'Get Ready With Me' video.
The star could be seen in a fluffy white dressing gown as she did her makeup in the mirror and opened up about the devastating loss.
“I obviously lost my competition horse Siz, so after that, I’m not going to lie, I’ve really, really struggled,” she said.
With a lump in her throat, she continued: “Just with getting over losing him and it all happened so quickly, it was so shocking, and just the hole in my life, in my routine, everything that it has sort of left.
After finishing off her foundation before her night out on the town, Gemma said: “So it left such a massive hole and had a knock on effect with everything.
“I took a massive knock to my confidence and how I’m feeling generally. I felt pretty low, and obviously that’s expected after losing an animal. It proper hit me.”
“But, I feel like I’m in a better place now. I wouldn’t say I’ve got over it, because, you know, I don’t think I will ever be able to properly get over it,” she added. “I’m fine, I’m doing okay, feeling better in myself which is good.”
Gemma revealed the horse's death last month when she took to Instagram to post a series of throwback shots that showed Sirius at various events.
In the caption, she explained: “On Friday we lost my horse of a lifetime due to a sudden and severe illness words can’t describe how much this horse meant to me and my family.
“He was truly one in a million. Everyone who met Siz will know how amazing and caring his temperament was. He was taken far too soon, he has left us all heartbroken and in complete shock."
She concluded: “You taught me so much Siz and I will never be able to thank you enough, you brought so much joy and happiness to our lives and you’ll never be replaced. I love you endlessly.”
