Countryfile presenter Matt Baker, 43, has taken to Instagram to share proof of his past experience as a gymnast amid backlash over his commentary on the gymnastics at the Tokyo Olympics for the BBC. Some viewers of the BBC’s coverage of the Olympic Games have questioned Matt’s credibility as a commentator, as he is best known for being a TV presenter on Countryfile and The One Show, rather than for his gymnastic prowess.

However, Matt was also a successful competing gymnast in his younger years and won several national prizes for his skills.

The star took to Instagram and silenced his critics earlier this week by sharing press cuttings from his time as a gymnast.

One news story Matt shared was about him winning a national contest, while another focused on him scoring a perfect 10 from a judge at the British Amateur Gymnastics Association when he was just 12-years-old.

Alongside several images of Matt showing off his talents in the sport, he wrote in view of his 278,000 followers: “For all those asking… here’s some clippings from my Old scrap book!
