While visiting the offices of international organization ActionAid, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, discussed the urgent need to address sexual violence against girls in schools. Her visit comes on the heels of paying tribute to Uyinene Mrwetyana, a University of Cape Town student who was brutally raped and murdered in August.
Clad in a khaki green shirt dress by Room 502, black Manolo Blahnik pumps, and the Labyrinth earrings by Pichulik, the duchess accepted flowers and drawings from two young girls awaiting her arrival, according to Hello!. During the meeting with ActionAid staff, the outlet also reported that Meghan spoke candidly about gender-based violence.
“If within your community, everyone’s just like that’s just what’s done, that’s just how it is, then you’re shamed… even talking about it even though you’re the victim,” she reportedly said.
Earlier, Meghan visited the memorial site for Mrwetyana, where she left a yellow banner with the message Simi kunye kulesisimo, or “We stand together in this moment.”
She also visited the University of Johannesburg, where she talked about other challenges women confront while pursuing higher education.
“The goal here is to be able to have gender equality, to be able to support women as they are working in research and higher education goals,” the duchess said during a roundtable discussion. “And also be able to have workshops to convene things that are really helping people understand the importance of gender equality.”
