Neil Patrick Harris is excited for the Doogie Howser reboot!
The 47-year-old actor opened up about the upcoming Disney+ series, titled Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., which will reimagine the original early 1990s television show.
Set in modern-day Hawaii, the 10-episode comedy follows Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a mixed-race 16-year-old girl, juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager.
Guiding Lahela (and also complicating things) is her family, including her spitfire Irish mother (Kathleen Rose Perkins) who’s also her supervisor at the hospital, and her “Local Boy” father (Jason Scott Lee) who struggles to accept that his daughter is no longer his little girl.
Speaking during an interview with Variety, Neil revealed that he’s looking forward to the series, seemingly giving his stamp of approval.
“I’m so happy,” he shared. “The creator of it was a big producer on ‘How I Met Your Mother’ (Kourtney Kang). I think setting it with a female protagonist is a great call… I think it’s in really good hands.”
Neil added that he feels “like it’s a passion project for many and I can’t wait to watch it.”
Production on the series is expected to start later this year.
