Nick Hewer: Countdown star talks serious health scare ‘I was dangerously close’

Countdown host Nick Hewer, 75, said he is lucky to be alive. Speaking to the Daily Express, he said that he was an “inch away” from having a stroke when he was working in Africa a couple of years ago.

Speaking to the paper, Nick said that when he was in Sierra working for the charity Street Child, his vision “went all funny”.

On his return to the UK, he sought immediate medical attention.

Here his doctor discovered his blood pressure was “really high”.

He explained: “He took my blood pressure and it turned out to be really high. He looked really alarmed and said to me, ‘Good God, how long has this been going on for?’”

He continued: “He said I was dangerously close to having a stroke and he would have to put me on hypertension pills but that I should get my eyes checked as well.

“I went straight to Moorfields eye hospital in London where it was confirmed I was an inch away from having a stroke and that instead of a blood vessel bursting in the brain, it had popped behind the retina of my right eye.”

If undetected, the doctors said it could have gone into his brain.

Nick said he now feels grateful to be alive.

He added: “I was fortuitous to be in the right place at the right time and I’ve been taking hypertension tablets since.”

This is not the first time the presenter has spoken about his health scare.

Back in August he dropped the health bombshell on his Countdown co-host Rachel Riley.

He told her how he thought he had suffered a stroke after his eyes “went funny”.

He said: “Well, I’ve got to tell you I’ve had a few issues with my eyes. A few years ago now, I was with some other people and I suddenly thought to myself, I think I’m having a stroke.

“Because my eyes all went funny.”

“Things were floating around in my eyes and suddenly a Portuguese Man-Of-War shot right across my eye.

“And I thought it’s not a stroke but I’m not sure what it is.
