Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer have spoken about their time together during various fishing trips, ahead of the Christmas special of their hugely popular show Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing. The 62-year-old Fast Show star admitted that he has looked back at previous episodes and realised he was being “quite rude” to his co-star.
The actor and comedian said he found Bob “annoying” when he was “in the zone” while fishing.
Paul explained he thought the TV star’s attempts at conversation were unnecessary and that he often brushed them aside by giving minimal answers to his questions.
He said: “[When I’m] in the zone, Bob’s just wittering away like an annoying chaffinch and I want the conversation to end.
“Stealth is important when you’re fishing,” he added.
However on reflection, he realised that he could have handled the situation better.
“But when I watch it back I realise I’ve been quite rude at times,” he continued.
Elaborating, he went on to say: “If Bob asks me about my favourite pie I’ll answer the question but I won’t ask it back.”
Bob, 61, said he was well aware of Paul’s wish to concentrate on the job at hand and often asks pointless questions just to bother him.
“When he puts his line in, he can ignore everything I say,” the Shooting Stars host said in their joint interview with The Telegraph.
“To make a show of it, I had to start bothering him.
“I would wander over and ask questions like: ‘Have you ever used a set square, Paul? Have you ever been to Leicester on your own?’.”
Paul and Bob, who have both had heart problems in the past, also spoke about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Paul thinks he had COVID-19 at the start of the year during his stint on the West End in Only Fools and Horses.
He had what he thought was a cold, but has since realised it could have been the virus after tests in May discovered that he had the antibodies in his system.
The actor said he “pushed through” at the time as he didn’t want people to think “comedians were lightweights.”
“I nearly took out my family!” the shocked star said in hindsight.
Father-of-two Bob had a triple heart bypass surgery back in 2015.
The pair, who have got used to people shouting out their character’s famous catchphrases over the years, said now people come up to them and thank them for raising awareness for heart disease.
“Now they come up and say ‘Thank you for getting my dad to have his heart checked out’,” Paul revealed.
It was their shared heart problems that inspired the duo to go on fishing trips together in the first place and it was there that the show as we know it was conceived.
Gone Christmas Fishing is on BBC Two on Sunday at 8.10pm
