World Cup Diary: England gearing up for Spain final clash
TalkTV presenter Piers Morgan has taken a swipe at whom he describes as “Aussie babies” following the Women’s World Cup semi-final match, which saw the Lionesses storm to a 3-1 victory.
The star made his point while reposting an article on X, formerly known as Twitter, which described the England team as “cynical” and “cowardly”.
The article also claimed that “England tried to injure Sam Kerr in World Cup semi-final win”.
Piers was having none of it and commented: “Aww, so NOW they care about the spirit of the game. Stop moaning, you big Aussie babies. Your Matildas got mauled by our vastly superior Lionesses, just as Larwood mauled your batsmen back in 1932/3.”
The article he took umbrage at appeared in the Australian edition of The Daily Mail.
His remarks drew a mixed response from his 8.5 million followers.

@abeomer commented: “In all fairness, they were totally owned by the Lioness.” (sic)
A user called @RebeccaSmi10645 agreed writing: “The Brits were great! By far the better team on the night and deserve admiration and respect.
“The Aussies played their hearts out through the entire series and in that game! Sam Kerr was frightening! All in all it was top tier sport and intense entertainment.” (sic)
However, @Neil_Elvis felt the need to have a dig at Piers about the Ashes, chiming in: “Completely wrecked your post by saying what you did at the end there. Do you think that even needs to come into consideration when Australia currently hold the Ashes. And will decimate England next time around here in Australia . All these tears continue to be so delicious.”
Elsewhere @kickass_koala tried to give some perspective. “Well maybe take the win with class, a population of 70million overcame 26 million playing a game that’s 3rd or 4th down the rank nationally,” they pointed out. “That said I want it number one and have loved every day of this world cup!”

Piers actually attended the game which took place in Stadium Australia on Wednesday.
At one point, the outspoken broadcaster was spotted yawning as the game took place while he sat in front of a flag supporting the host country.
The Lionesses’ spectacular win secured them a place in the final and they will now take on Spain tomorrow in an attempt to win the tournament.
The eagerly anticipated match takes place this Sunday at 11am UK time, and will be broadcast live on both the BBC and ITV.
