Prince Charles Was Caught Taking Issue with His Portrayal on 'The Crown'

For those of you wondering if Prince Charles watches The Crown, the answer appears to be a resounding yes. And he has a lot of thoughts. Scottish minister Anas Sarwar reportedly opened up about chatting to Charles at the opening of the Scottish Parliament back in October 2021, and said that the future King introduced himself by insisting he was nothing like his on-screen character.

Per Anas, Charles “came over and went, ‘Hello, nice to meet you all. I’m nowhere near how they portray me on Netflix.’” The minister added, “I thought that was a really interesting way of how you describe yourself. I’m going to be in so much trouble for this because I don’t think you are meant to tell private conversations.”

Hopefully not, because we love some good royals/Crown intel! And Charles is far from the only member of this family who watches. Turns out the Queen herself has tuned into the show, and her granddaughter Princess Eugenie once said she’d watched “a couple of episodes” and noted that it is “filmed beautifully” and “you feel very proud to watch it.”

However, things have gotten slightly more tense between The Crown and the IRL royals as the series has taken on more recent history. Back in 2019, showrunner Peter Morgan told The Times that he’s met with “people who are very high ranking and very active within the organization” to “tell them what I have in mind and they brace themselves slightly.” In response, the Queen’s communications secretary wrote an entire letter denying having anything to do with the show, which said in part “We appreciate that readers ofThe Guardian may enjoy this fictionalised interpretation of historical events but they should do so knowing that the royal household is not complicit in interpretations made by the programme. The royal household has never agreed to vet or approve content, has not asked to know what topics will be included, and would never express a view as to the programme’s accuracy.”
