Richard Coles heartbreak: How Rev is dealing with life without partner David

Reverend Richard Coles took to his Twitter to share with fans an unexpected ending to what started as a Chickpea emergency.

The reverend initially tweeted: “Emergency: I need authority to substitute chickpeas for cannellini beans in a ribollita or a better idea.”

He then proceeded to tag a series of celeb chefs within the tweet including Nigella Lawson.

Rev Richard later tweeted of how his chickpea emergency had been remedied after he found a tin of butter beans his late partner David had stockpiled ahead of a ‘no- deal’ Brexit.

Rev Richard wrote: “For those whose day has been ruined by my cannellini bean drama I found some butter beans that David had stockpiled when we used to worry about a no-deal Brexit.

“I hope this salutary news has not arrived too late.”

Richard also told Zoe Ball while appearing on her breakfast show he had received a card from David this Valentine’s Day.

When asked if he had received any valentines cards on the show, Richard said: “I did, from my beloved, which came as rather a surprise, not because he is unromantic or forgetful, but because he died in December.

“With remarkable foresight, he arranged for me a Valentine’s card before he departed, and I’m very touched and grateful.

“And a bit surprised, because in widowhood you think your days of wine and roses are done. Not so.”

Richard’s partner David, who was also a reverend, died in December 2019.

Rev Richard took to twitter to announce David’s death where he wrote: “I’m very sorry to say that @RevDavidColes has died.”

He went on to thank the hospital and staff that cared for David: “Thanks to the brilliant teams who looked after him at @KettGeneral.”

During an interview with the Guardian in March, Richard later confirmed David had died from internal bleeding caused by an underlying health condition.

Two days after announcing David’s death, Richard revealed he had been targeted by a “small but lively correspondence from Christians who wish me to know that D is in hell and I will follow”.

Richard then told his followers he had received an unsigned letter which read: “Dear Mr Coles, I can’t begin to tell you how happy I am to hear of the death of your partner…”

He carried on in a second tweet: “I have been praying for your pain for a long time now…”

However, Richard assured fans of how he chose not to be affected the comments made within the letter.

In a tweet, Richard wrote: “Horrible letters: they don’t touch me.”

After becoming civil partners in 2011, Richard and David chose to remain celibate to retain their bishop licences.

Richard opened up to Christian Today on the topic of his and David’s commitment to another and said: “Of course it has its challenges and sacrifices.

“We live in good standing with the teaching of the Church, but I wouldn’t wish that to imply that I saw that as a good and noble thing, because I don’t, but it is currently where we are.”
