Rod Stewart asks fans for help over encounter which left him fearing for life

Sir Rod Stewart has recalled the “insane” moment he feared for his life after robbers targeted him and others at a restaurant in Buenos Aires.

On Tuesday, the 78-year-old singer shared an unearthed interview of him discussing the gun-fuelled encounter with Trevor McDonald for ITN as he made his way to Argentina this week for new gigs.

In the clip, believed to be from 1978, the rockstar explained to Trevor: “Police came in with a sawn-off shotgun and the robbers were there with their guns, neither of them had the guns cocked.

“And we were all under the table, there were bullets flying everywhere.

“We were really lucky to get out with our lives.”

Rod went on to confirm that one man had died in the incident.

Taking to Twitter, he shared the video, writing: “On my way to Buenos Aires and it’s got me thinking about this insane encounter.

“Wonder if the restaurant is still around? Anyone remember the name?”

Many of his fans commented on the post with mixed messages, as one wrote: “Wow, how horrifying.”

A second typed: “Be safe! Hopefully, it’s safer now.”

A third added: “That’s wild! Wish I knew the name. Have a fun and safe time there, Rod! My Dad was your biggest fan. He would have remembered.”

Rod reflected on the incident, which took place at the La Candela restaurant, in his 2013 book Rod: The Autobiography.

The rockstar wrote that he was held at the food establishment by robbers who had demanded his luxury Porsche watch.

After the alarm was raised, armed police rushed to the scene and a gunfight ensued.

He explained: “We flew to Argentina and were taken to an exclusive restaurant because the record company didn’t want any trouble with bandits.

“It was the only time in my life I have ever had a personal bodyguard.

“As the dessert plates were being cleared, the doors to the restaurant crashed open and in ran a gang of bandits with guns.

“It was terrifying. We were told to remove our jewellery and I nervously, unclasped a nice Porsche watch and dropped it on the tablecloth.

“But someone must have hit an emergency alarm button before the bandits could collect their prize – and the police siren was heard from the street.

“It all kicked off properly. The bandits were inside, shooting out, and the police were outside, shooting in.”

He went on to say his record company then got him out of the city because it “was too dangerous and their insurance didn’t cover me”.
