He went on to become a solo performer and released his first number one album titled Atlantic Crossing.
Fast forward 48 years and the singer is still belting out his greatest hits to fans across the world.
This Saturday, he kicks off his North American tour, followed by gigs in South America and then his Las Vegas residency towards the end of the year.
The singer has vowed to never retire, despite reports claiming his children want him to slow down and focus on health and family.
“No, no, no, no, no, no,” he told People Magazine last month when asked if he had any retirement plans. “I love what I do.”
He added: “It’s funny, critics keep saying on this tour, ‘Oh, he’s gone off the stage to have a rest’.
“No I haven’t! I’ve gone off the stage because I’ wringing wet. I’m so b****y fit, you won’t believe it.”
