Tekashi 6ix9ine Released Early From Prison Amid Coronavirus Concerns

Tekashi 6ix9ine was just released early from prison, but he’s not totally free just yet.

As you’ll recall, the rapper was arrested in 2018 on multiple charges and pled guilty in February 2019. In December, he was given a two-year sentence after testifying against members of the Nine Trey Gangsters.

But now he’s home and on house arrest amid concerns over his health due to the coronavirus pandemic!

The 23-year-old, born Daniel Hernandez, was released on Wednesday and placed on house arrest due to his asthma after a New York judge granted his compassionate release motion. His attorney Dawn Florio told E! News:

“I am super excited that the judge granted Danny the opportunity to serve his last four months on home confinement so he could be re-united with his family and be safer than in jail because of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

He first requested his early release on March 22. In a letter to the judge, attorney Lance Lazzaro wrote in part on Tekashi’s behalf:

“While I recognize that his release date is only about four months away, given the health crisis that is currently tearing through this region and Mr. Hernandez’s compromised medical condition, please strongly consider modifying Mr. Hernandez’s sentence so as to immediately make him eligible for home confinement.

Given the significant risk to such individuals and the alarming contagious nature of the virus, New York City Corrections and the New York State Courts are taking steps to release inmates who are at high risk from this virus. I understand that 40-50 such inmates have either been released or will be released in response to this concern. I learned today that an inmate at MDC has been diagnosed with the coronavirus. It seems like just a matter of time before all prisons in the area are hit with this virus, both inmates and guards.”

His original release date was slated for this coming August 2 after receiving credit for 13 months he had already served. The judge found that these “extraordinary and compelling reasons” presented by his legal team warranted the reduction in time behind bars and that the singer “does not pose a danger to the community.”

Although the rainbow-haired artist does not have coronavirus and will take a test “when it becomes readily available,” according to Lazzaro, he does have a history of medical issues. In October, he was hospitalized for bronchitis and sinusitis.
