Laura Dern has been dominating the big screen for over 40 years. The award-winning actress has been in a wide range of movies from comedy to drama, and suspense. Her exceptional acting skills have allowed millions of fans to laugh and cry right along with the character that she is playing.
Laura’s parents are accomplished actors, Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd. Because acting is obviously in her blood, many people were unsurprised to find out that Laura wanted to get into acting when she was just a young girl.
However, just because she came from a family of actors does not mean that any of her roles have ever been given to her on a silver platter. Just like everyone else, she had to work hard in order to get to where she is today.
In fact, if it weren’t for 19 ice cream cones, Dern may have never made it into the acting industry in the first place.
How did ice cream help Laura Dern become an actress?
With both of Laura’s parents being prominent actors when she wasn’t living with her grandmother, she was spending the majority of her childhood on different movie sets.
According to the Telegraph, when Laura was just 7 years old, her mother got her a small part on one of the movies that she was starring on called Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the movie, the only thing that Laura was supposed to do was sit at a table and eat an ice cream cone. And while she did a good job, the director ordered the cast members to shoot the scene a total of 19 times.
Every time that they had to shoot a new scene, Dern would eat another ice cream cone.
Laura recalls that after they had finally finished shooting the scene, the Director, Martin Scorsese, had told Ladd: “If she can eat an ice cream cone 19 times, she’s got to be an actress.”
Dern often tells the ice cream cone story to people. While growing up around actors may have sparked her interest, it was the fact that a world-renowned movie director had acknowledged the fact that she was good at acting is what made her really want to pursue a career in acting.

Dern’s parents knew how hard the life of an actor can be. The industry can be cut-throat at times, and it is for this reason that both of her parents tried to discourage her from becoming an actor. However, Dern was determined to achieve her dreams.
When she was just 9 years old, she started taking acting classes. Her parents refused to drive her to the classes, so she would ride her bike to get to her acting class.
Before she had hit her teen years, Dern was already starring in hit movies. She told the Telegraph that her peers at school were not impressed with her being an actress, and she was picked on quite a bit for it, but she did not let that stop her.
By the time she was a teenager, she was forced to become emancipated in order to work longer hours and take roles that had a more mature theme. Dern insists that her emancipation had nothing to do with the care that she received from her parents and that her parents supported her decision.
“A lot of people ask: ‘What was traumatic in your childhood that you needed to do that?’ ” Nothing,” said Dern. “Let’s be clear: My mom was just as overprotective after the emancipation as she was before.”
The fact that Dern was willing to be emancipation as a teenager shows the level commitment that she had when it came to furthering her career.
Laura Dern’s career accomplishments
All of the hard work and dedication that Dern had from an early age has paid off big time. Over the course of her career, she has starred in several Blockbuster hits, including Jurassic Park, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Tale, and The Fault in Our Stars. She also starred in HBO’s hit series Big Little Lies.
She has also won four Golden Globe Awards and she has also won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role on Big Little Lies.
Dern has had such a successful career over the last four decades and it doesn’t look like she is going to slow down anytime soon. This Christmas she will be hitting the big screen once again when she plays the role of Marmee in the remake of Little Women.
