Spoilers below for Stranger Things 3 finale
A surprise promo for Stranger Things 4 appeared online on Friday morning, and it revealed the answer to a mystery that fans have been wondering since Stranger Things 3 debuted last July: Hopper is alive, and in Russia. This confirms that he’s “The American” that the subtitles int he Russian prison referred to in the show’s post-credits scene. The promotion also makes it official with word from The Duffer Brothers: Stranger Things 4 has officially begun production.
The Twitter promo is captioned “From Russia with love…” and is 50 seconds of footage from a Russian facility, primarily of prisoners working. At the end of the video, the camera zooms in on one of those prisoners, revealing a familiar face: David Harbour as Hawkins, Indiana Police Chief Jim Hopper. Except, for some reason, he’s bald—and far away from home.
A press release from Netflix—a letter from series creators The Duffer Brothers—confirms the premise for the fourth season of the sci-fi smash hit, and Hopper’s identity as the mysterious ‘American’ from the third season’s post-credits scene.
It’s the perfect way to get Stranger Things fans excited online. A surprise video is always fun and invites speculation, but this also allows fans to no longer waste any time wondering whether or not the show’s (arguably) most popular character would be making his return. David Harbour—who will also make his Marvel debut as Red Guardian in Black Widow this summer—will be back on Stranger Things, news surely welcome to the ears of any fan.
