As I tweeted over the holiday weekend, one of the overarching themes of Omid Scobie’s Endgame is that King Charles and his heir are two of the worst managers in history. Say what you will about Queen Elizabeth II – and all of us could say a lot – but she understood how to balance family squabbles with the actual work of the institution. Yes, she had ostrich-syndrome and all of that, but the sheer fact that she maintained good contact with both Prince Harry and Meghan should tell you that she didn’t hold an “institutional grudge” against them. She saw them as her beloved grandson and his beloved wife. Charles is incapable of managing that family/institution drama, as is William. According to Page Six’s excerpts, people within the family have even spoken to Charles about how he needs to be the one to reconcile with Harry.
Members of the British royal family are allegedly getting fed up with King Charles III’s reluctance to reconcile with his youngest son, Prince Harry. In an advance copy of “Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival” obtained by Page Six, journalist Omid Scobie spoke to several sources about the Duke of Sussex’s turbulent past few years.
While Harry and Markle have allegedly made several attempts to reconnect with their estranged family members, it seems Charles and others across the pond won’t budge.
“It’s complex, but there’s increasing frustration from some of the wider circle of family members that Charles won’t just fix things for the sake of everyone,” a royal source claimed to Scobie.
Meanwhile, a friend of Harry’s claimed the royal reached out to Charles to wish the family a Merry Christmas in 2022 after his father refused to make the first move, another excerpt from the book claims.
“It was an awkward conversation, but he knew if he didn’t make those first steps, there would never be any progress,” the pal explained of Harry’s decision to reach out to his father. “There were no raised voices, no arguments … but the King was cold and brief rather than open to any proper dialogue.”
Elsewhere in the book, Scobie alleged “both the institution and the family” were still struggling to “come to grips with [the] fact” that Harry, 39, and Markle, 42, have found success in their endeavors after leaving the UK.
“I’ve watched Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace repeatedly get worried about being upstaged and derailed by the couple, and leak negative information on Harry and Meghan … during moments that could easily be focused on genuine royal news instead,” the controversial journalist wrote.

I’ve made this point before, but do you ever just step back from the daily royal soap opera and think about how f–king bonkers it is that Charles hasn’t found a way to cauterize this PR bleed? We know that Charles’s actions from 2018-2020 were all attempts at managing, silencing and punishing the Sussexes, and bringing them “to heel.” That was his goal in 2020 – but when that didn’t happen, why hasn’t he changed or updated his strategy? Why is this 75-year-old man – a whole-ass KING – still somehow incapable of merely hearing out Harry and/or apologizing?
