Timoth\u00e9e Chalamets Willy Wonka Bears a Striking Resemblance to a Certain Muppet

A couple of years ago Timothée Chalamet was the actor everyone had their eyes on, following his breakout roles in Lady Bird and Call Me By Your Name. He’s continuing to make incredibly sound (if somewhat predictable) career choices, starring in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and the Wes Anderson movie The French Dispatch—but there is one upcoming project which does present a bit of a curveball.

We’re talking, of course, about the Willy Wonka prequel, in which Chalamet will portray a younger version of the famous chocolatier.

It’s something of a surprise that a “Young Wonka” movie is being made at all, considering the origin story of the fictional factory owner involves Wonka traveling into the jungle to pretty much enslave the Oompa Loompas. Possibly, Chalamet saw something in the character that presented a challenge to him as an actor: maybe he thought he could give a unique performance that would stand alongside Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp’s respective interpretations of the reclusive wealthy weirdo. Who’s to say, perhaps Wonka is the latest role that every performer wants to get their chops into, like Hamlet or the Joker. Even The Rock very nearly played him.

We don’t know much about the plot of the movie yet, but Chalamet did recently tweet a photo of himself in costume from the set. And while some responses from Twitter were of the predictably thirsty variety (“show us your Willy!” some cried, “I got a chocolate factory you can visit,” others offered), a large number of users were quick to point out just how eerily similar Chalamet looks to Gonzo in The Muppet Christmas Carol.

And they’re right. Once you see it, it’s impossible to unsee.
