Before Wendy Williams started delivering hot topics through your television screen, she had a successful career as a radio host. She captivated listeners with her takes on hip hop culture and celebrity gossip. But with that came critics.
During her radio days, Williams earned the ire of stars like Whitney Houston, Will Smith, and Tupac Shakur. The celebrities would often clap back in music or interviews. But some have gone as far as threatening physical abuse.
In a recent episode of her daytime talk show, Williams recalled how a hip hop mogul once sent his girl group to fight her over comments she made on the air. Though she did not say names, many believe that they know who that person is.
A recap of Williams’ revelation
In an Oct. 9 episode, Williams recalled how a music mogul once “sent his all girl-group to beat [her] a**” in front of a radio station.
“Once upon a time, there was music mogul who sent his all-girl group to beat my a** in front of the radio station,” she recalled. “I finish my shift, round up my headphones, put my bag in the crook of my arm, and see everyone lined up on the side of the window, looking down at the sidewalk.”
“And I’m going downstairs, and my new boyfriend at the time, the bad Kevin [Hunter] … and I get downstairs to see this girl group jump out of a gypsy cab to come after me to kick my a**. I’m like, ‘For what?’ You know what I said was true. You all are broke, and you were living in projects, and that was that.”
But Williams did not name names
Williams did not say who the group was. Instead, she said she would tell the full story in her upcoming Lifetime biopic, which airs in 2020.
However, social media users were too anxious to wait. So, they did some digging and unearthed an old radio clip where Williams revealed their identities. In it, she claimed that it was the ’90s R&B group, Total, which consists of Kima Raynor, Keisha Spivey, and Pamela Long.
The group, which is known for songs like “Kissin’ You” and “Can’t You See,” was signed to Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records.
Diddy allegedly sent the group to fight Williams
There’s widespread speculation that Diddy allegedly sent Total to jump Williams, which isn’t totally surprising given their rumored history.
Rumor has it that Diddy got Williams fired from Hot 97 after she suggested in 1998 that he might be gay. The beef seemingly lasted for nearly two decades until they made up on her show in June 2017.
“I know I pissed a lot of people off, including you,” Wendy said. “But this is a full-circle moment, everybody. Get into adult conversation.”
“It’s been a long time coming,” Combs added to Williams. “And I want to just tell you how proud I am of you because I don’t think you get enough credit for really being the first one to cover our culture — you know, the hip-hop culture and also hip-hop celebrities — and just understanding that it’s news.”
