Whitney Houston questioned whether Bobby Brown truly loved her, before she agreed to marry him.
In a new memoir about the life of the legendary singer, A Song For You: My Life With Whitney Houston, her best friend Robyn Crawford has recalled the moment that Houston discussed Bobby Brown's proposal.
Crawford was best friends with Whitney for more than 30 years and she said that the singer had some doubts before tying the knot in 1992.
Recalling the moment that Whitney lay down beside her on their bed in the New Jersey mansion that she shared with the singer, Crawford said that Houston was not convinced about Brown's intentions.
Whitney allegedly said: "Bobby asked me to marry him and I think I’m going to do it.”
Crawford said that she challenged Whitney, asking her if she truly loves him, to which the singer said yes.
Whitney then asked: "Do you think he loves me?"
Crawford admits to feeling "very emotional" on the wedding day and she believes it was the last time that she was really best friends with Houston.
In the years following the wedding day, Crawford said that she became increasingly isolated from Houston, as the singer descended into a chaotic life of drug use.
The marriage was often volatile and headline grabbing and Crawford admitted: "I saw and heard him speak to her in ways that were demeaning, and [he] talked down to her.”
She said that she eventually quit as Houston's personal assistant in 2000, after she felt she could no longer protect her friend from the lifestyle she was now used to.
Whitney died on February 11, 2012 after drowning in a bath at the Beverly Hilton hotel, having binged on cocaine, cannabis and prescription drugs.
When Crawford heard of her friend's death, she wrote: "I felt my inside shattering.”
Writing the memoir, Crawford said: "I felt the need to stand up for our friendship. I have a lot of beautiful, wonderful, exciting adventures and loving, caring memories. Whitney was a beautiful friend.”
