Today is the end of an era. After a couple rough years in the spotlight, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have officially left the senior royal family and capped off their duties with a final appearance at the Commonwealth Day Service. Before you spiral thinking about all the cool things Meghan and Harry can do now that they don’t have to worry about royal protocol and whatnot, let’s take a look at their body language during today’s service. Specifically, we need to discuss how they had the most lukewarm greeting with Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Unlike last year, the royal Fab Four didn’t join the queen’s procession and were seated before she arrived, which means they greeted each other inside Westminster Abbey. Now that the brothers’ feud has taken center stage, the tension has seeped into their body language toward each other. According to body language expert Blanca Cobb, the way the two couples acknowledged one another is so telling.
She explained, “As Meghan waves, she and Harry say ‘hi.’ Kate doesn’t look in their direction but talks briefly to the lady in white [Sophie, Countess of Wessex] who’s seated right behind her. As Kate sits down, her face is expressionless.” Big yikes. Blanca went on to acknowledge that Prince William did respond to Meghan and Harry but overall, “the greeting seems lackluster among the four of them, particularly Kate’s lack of acknowledgment.” She added, “Even though it’s a formal occasion, Kate could have smiled or waved.”
NEW: Prince Harry and Meghan joined the royal family at a Westminster Abbey Commonwealth Day service, the first time they’ve been seen publicly with Prince William and Kate in months and their final engagement as working members of the royal family. https://t.co/SSum5cv2qn pic.twitter.com/amQEn5PqKd
That’s one expert’s opinion, but in the opinion of a Cardi B fan (me), Kate might be embodying that “If I see you and I don’t speak, that means I don’t f*ck with you” vibe, which, ouch.
But back to Blanca’s take! She added that while both couples were beaming as they walked in separately on this “bittersweet” day, they all took on a more “serious” look when they were near each other.
And though William and Harry have beef, their connection is apparent—even when they’re not on good terms. Blanca explained, “Even if there is a rift between the two men, it’s interesting that their underlying brotherly bond is seeping out in their similar seriousness. The family tie is hard to break even in the midst of problems.”
Clearly there are still some issues that need to be resolved, but on the bright side, at least William and Harry still have a bond. There’s hope their relationship could recover!
