Mental health has been a big topic on Red Table Talk before. Once again Willow Smith is talking about dealing with anxiety and actually needing space from her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith when it gets really bad.
Willow Smith and Tyler Cole recently released ‘The Anxiety’
Smith and her partner, Tyler Cole released an album this month called “The Anxiety.” The album was focused on dealing with anxiety and the duo called themselves The Anxiety.
“I am infinitely grateful for this process and all the support that @existentialcrisisboy and I have received // Special S/O to all the beautiful folks who came out to experience our performance art at The GEFFEN Contemporary @moca it was truly a magical experience for me // I hope the vibrations from these songs soothes your heart like your love and support soothes mine,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
They promoted the album by staying in a glass box for a day in a Los Angeles museum. They proceeded to act out eight states of emotions, according to CNN.
She talked about needing to be alone with Jada Pinkett Smith
Smith talks about her extreme anxiety in a new episode of Red Table Talk. Entertainment Tonight released an exclusive clip about her recent experience.
“We had an experience four days ago,” she said. “I was having extreme anxiety. I just had to go. I couldn’t talk. I had to just cocoon and like be with myself for a moment.”
The co-host explained why her mother wouldn’t have been helpful in that moment. “That was so important because it would have been so much more intense if I had been looking to you to be like, ‘Help me!’ And then, when I was ready, I opened the cocoon,” she said to her mom.
Pinkett Smith added, “That self soothing is a miracle worker.” Willow said there is shame and confusion when dealing with anxiety, which stops people from talking about it.
The episode reportedly focuses on survivors of suicide attempts. It will be available on Facebook Watch on on Dec. 22 at 9 a.m. PST / 12 p.m. EST.
She previously opened up about self-harm
This isn’t the first time the singer has opened up about mental health with her mom. Smith said after releasing her hit, “Whip My Hair” she didn’t want to finish her album and she went to a dark place.
“And after all of that kind of settled down and it was like a kind of lull, I was just listening to a lot of dark music,” she said on Red Table Talk. “It was just so crazy, and I was plunged into this black hole, and I was, like, cutting myself.”
Her mother and her grandmother, Adrienne admitted they didn’t know this. It looks like the family is open to continuing the conversation around mental health on Red Table Talk.
