YouTube Suspends Monetization On All Three Of Shane Dawson’s Channels — Brands Back Out Too

Shane Dawson‘s long YouTube career suddenly appears to be going up in smoke.

The longtime viral video creator is under fire over resurfaced old videos containing racist, sexual, and other inappropriate references and skits. And now, amid major social media fallout, YouTube itself has officially suspended monetization on all three of Dawson’s highly successful channels, according to Tubefilter.

Dawson’s YT empire includes his flagship channel Shane, with 22.5 million subscribers and more than 35 million monthly views, his off-shoot Shane Dawson TV (8.5 million subs), and a relatively new beauty channel, Shane Glossin’ (3.7 million subs). Suffice to say he was making a LOT of money on the online video-sharing platform, so this will be quite a hit to the pocketbook.

According to Tubefilter, YouTube reiterated that although it takes such demonetization actions “in rare circumstances,” they felt it was smart to do so in this situation because “new information has emerged and its impact to the creator ecosystem is current.” The length of the punishment here is indefinite, though it will not be permanent, according to the report; it officially started late Monday night.

It’s not just YouTube taking action here, either. Per the report, Target has removed two of Dawson’s books of essays from their stores, and makeup company Morphe has taken down Dawson’s new makeup collab with fellow YouTuber Jeffree Star, as you can see with a screenshot of the missing merch from the retailer’s website (below):

Wow. Talk about swift, decisive action.

The long-term consequences of some of these business decisions remain to be seen, of course, but as we’ve noticed with the cancellation of other internet stars, this can seriously cut short their careers and ability to make big money online.

Of course, Dawson tried to walk back some of his old, problematic moments in a new video this past weekend, but not everybody was buying the authenticity of his apology. Jada Pinkett Smith and son Jaden Smith were two of the most vocal critics of the YouTuber’s “Accountability” video, refusing his apology and calling him to task for an old skit in which he pretended to masturbate to a picture of then-11-year-old Willow Smith.

No matter how long the demonetization penalty may last, here’s hoping the controversial vlogger can use this time to reflect on his past actions, and work to improve his current and future self. What do U think about YouTube’s decision here, Perezcious readers? Is it fair? Gone too far?? Sound off with your take on the whole situation down in the comments (below)…
