1.Serial killer Dennis Rader gave himself the nickname “BTK”, standing for “bind, torture, kill” — how he killed his victims.
He would also send taunting letters and clues to police and newspapers during the time he was active.
2.His series of murders took place over a long period of time from 1974 to 1991.
They were all killed in the Wichita, Kansas area.
3.But he wasn’t caught until three decades later.
He was arrested on Feb. 25, 2005 and is currently serving 10 life sentences.
4.In total, he killed 10 people.
And he had plans to kill an 11th person in 2004.
5.He enjoyed dressing up as his victims and would take selfies of himself that way.
According to authorities, this was his way of recreating his crime scenes to “live in that moment for years.”
6.He used to cut out female figures from magazine ads and then draw ropes and gags on them.
He would paste those images onto index cards so he could carry them around with him.
7.He claimed that as a child he used to kill animals.
Supposedly by hanging them, too.
8.He actually studied criminal justice in college.
He graduated from Wichita State University in 1979.
9.Rader was active in his church, and he served as a Boy Scout leader.
He even became president of his church, Christ Lutheran Church.
10.His first murders were four family members, who he strangled to death.
The victims were Joseph Otero, Julie Otero, and their two younger children Joseph Jr. and Josephine.
11.Joseph and Julie’s bodies were discovered by their three older children Charlie, Danny, and Carmen.
The kids ran to a neighbors house to call the police — at the time, they did not realize their siblings Joseph Jr. and Josephine had been murdered as well.
12.Semen would often be found at his crime scenes, but he never had sex with any of his victims.
The semen is what ultimately helped in capturing him.
13.Rader liked to collect “souvenirs” from his killings — often times underwear.
And he would keep them in what he called “hidey holes,” places inside his home, church, buried in the ground, or taped to bridges.
14.He described his preferred masturbation practice as “motel parties.”
He would go to a motel room, bind his wrists and ankles, and cover his head with a bag.
15.His last murder was committed in 1991.
He strangled a 62-year-old woman in her home.
16.One of Rader’s victims actually survived an attack.
Kevin Bright and his sister Kathryn were attacked in her home in 1974. Despite being choked and shot, Kevin survived by playing dead.
17.Some time after his second killing, he wrote a letter detailing the murders of the Otero family and said: “The code words for me will be…bind them, torture them, kill them, B.T.K.”
This letter was left at the Wichita, Kansas Public Library and was eventually found by police.
18.He also wrote a letter to a local TV station saying, “How many people do I have to kill before I get a name in the paper or some national attention?”
He had apparently “grown irritated” by the lack of media coverage of his killings.
19.And finally, he considers himself a “natural born predator” and explains his urges by what he calls, “Factor X.”
Rader believes “Factor X” is his insatiable and undeniable urge to kill, he’s even called it a demon that controls him.
