The following report compiles all significant security incidents confirmed by New York Times reporters throughout Afghanistan from the past seven days. It is necessarily incomplete as many local officials refuse to confirm casualty information. The report includes government claims of insurgent casualty figures, but in most cases these cannot be independently verified by The Times. Similarly, the reports do not include Taliban claims for their attacks on the government unless they can be verified. Both sides routinely inflate casualty totals for their opponents.
Nov. 1-7, 2019
At least 29 pro-government forces and 34 civilians were killed in Afghanistan during the past week. The deadliest attack took place Takhar Province, where the Taliban attacked the Charsiha security outpost in Khawaja Bahauddin District, killing eight soldiers and one police officer during a five-hour clash. In Baghlan Province, the Taliban planted a roadside bomb to target security forces in the village of Akakhil in Pul-i-Kumri City, the provincial capital. The bomb hit a vehicle, killing eight civilians, including women and children, and wounding six others. Earlier in the week, in the Darqad District of Takhar Province, five children between the ages of 4 and 12 were killed by a roadside bomb placed by members of the Taliban.

Nov. 7 Badghis Province: six civilians killed
Three women and three children were killed when the house of a Taliban commander was bombed by an airstrike in the village of Maidah Qol in Aa Kamari District. The commander was also killed along with his four Taliban bodyguards in the airstrike. The commander was responsible for killing a number of Afghan commandos during a military operation in the area a couple months ago.
Nov. 6 Balkh Province: two security forces killed
The Taliban attacked the center of Charbolak District, where heavy fighting continued for several hours. The district police chief and a pro-government militia member were killed in the clashes.
Nov. 6 Badghis Province: six police officers killed
Six police officers, including one female officer, were killed while traveling from Moqor District to Qala-e-Naw City, the provincial capital, when their Humvee was hit by a roadside bomb. Three other officers were wounded.
Nov. 5 Faryab Province: one soldier killed
A military vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in the Poshta area of Pashton Kot District, killing one soldier.
Nov. 5 Baghlan Province: one civilian killed
A teacher at Kabul University was traveling to Kunduz when he was abducted and then killed in the Himat Khil area of Baghlan-e-Markazi District.
Nov. 5 Kunduz Province: two police officers killed
The Taliban attacked the west entrance of Kunduz City, the provincial capital, where a clash continued for more than two hours, during which two police officers were killed and four security officers were wounded.
Nov. 5 Khost Province: one soldier killed
A vehicle carrying soldiers of the Afghan National Army was hit by a roadside bomb in the eastern part of Khost City, the provincial capital, killing one soldier and wounding three others.
Nov. 4 Baghlan Province: eight civilians killed
The Taliban targeted security forces with a roadside bomb in the Akakhil village of Dand-e-Shahabuddin area in Pul-i-Kumri City, the provincial capital. The bomb hit a vehicle, killing eight civilians, women and children among them, and wounding six others.
Nov. 4 Kandahar Province: one police officer killed
An unknown man shot and killed a police officer in Kandahar City, the provincial capital, and later managed to escape from the area.
Nov. 3 Baghlan Province: one police officer killed
A roadside bomb hit a police vehicle in the Dand-e-Shahabuddin area in the Fourth Police District of Pul-i-Kumri City, the provincial capital, killing one officer and wounding two others.
Nov. 3 Paktia Province: six civilians killed
A drone strike targeted a group of villagers in mountainous area of Shegai in Zazai Aryoub District, killing six of them. The victims were all local villagers who had gone to graze their cattle and collect wood.
Nov. 2 Paktika Province: seven civilians killed
Seven civilians, including four members of the same family, were killed in a roadside bomb explosion in the Sultan area of Sarawza District.
Nov. 2 Takhar Province: five children killed
A roadside bomb placed by the Taliban to target security forces exploded while a group of students were passed by the village of Tahiri in Darqad District, killing five children between the ages of 4 and 12 and wounding four others.
Nov. 2 Badakhshan Province: five security forces killed
The Taliban attacked Nusai District, rejecting an earlier invitation from the government for insurgents in the area to join them. Five police officers were killed, four security forces were wounded and two were taken prisoner. Officials did not provide a breakdown of casualties. The Taliban captured five villages in the area, reinforcements went to the area to push back the Taliban.
Nov. 1 Zabul Province: one civilian killed
A truck driver was killed by the police when he refused to pay a bribe at a police checkpoint in Qalat City, the provincial capital. The following day, other drivers blocked the road in protest.
Nov. 1 Kunduz Province: one police officer killed
The Taliban attacked the Aab Frosha area of Imam Sahib District, killing one police officer while capturing five outposts.
Nov. 1 Takhar Province: nine security forces killed
The Taliban attacked the Charsiha security outpost in Khawaja Bahauddin District, killing eight soldiers and one police officer. An additional three security forces were wounded in the course of battle.
