Bluey slammed for sending 'really damaging' message about 'body shaming' to kids

An episode of Bluey has come under fire from angry parents about sending an ‘upsetting’ message about ‘body shaming’ to children.

The children’s TV show, which first launched in Australia in 2018 and is available internationally on Disney Plus, follows a six-year-old Blue Heeler puppy as well as her friends and family.

But the cartoon’s most recent episode, titled Excercise, has been described as ‘really damaging’ for the way it portrays body image, self-esteem and weight.

The episode begins with Bluey’s dad Bandit shaving in the bathroom before he looks at the window and sighs: ‘Oh, man.’

Bluey, who had been hiding in the bath, then jumps up to his father’s shock and asks him why he seems discontent.

‘Eugh, I just need to do some exercise,’ Bandit replies as he grabs hold of his sides and looks at himself in the mirror while frowning.

Bluey’s mum Chilli then walks in and shares a similar sentiment to her husband, remarking: ‘Tell me about it.’

Sighing heavily, Bandit grabs his stomach and begins squeezing it as Bluey instructs him: ‘Why don’t you just do some exercise?’

Bandit responds: ‘The same old reason, Bluey, you kids and work.’

Bluey then begins to ask Bandit why he doesn’t start working out ‘now.’

The episode has not yet been released on Disney Plus in the UK. Metro.co.uk has contacted the company for comment and clarification on whether the episode will be made available.

It’s not the first time this year Bluey has courted controversy over an episode with Disney in the US reportedly banning an episode that contained farting.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Ludio Studios and Disney Plus.

Bluey is available to stream on Disney Plus.
