Following the debut of the London label’s third and final collaboration with Fred Perry in May, Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY has pulled back the curtains on a Spring/Summer 2023 collection that dissects the queer experience, with a fashion film, titled PHWOARRR!.
“Queerness is defiance, but it is also adaption,” read the collection notes. “It is a process of constant synthesis and hybridization, constant flux. It is always unapologetic, of course, but in the face of external hostility, we find innovative ways to survive. Embracing beauty in the lack of fixity, the lack of imposed linearity, is part of our shared queer experience.”
While pumped with trademark design codes, the collection itself takes a refreshing approach to the Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY archetype. Tailoring, in wool and recycled polyester, receives sharp, sensual cuts and arrives plastered with gender-nonconforming pinstripes and chainmail lining. Lightweight sheer dresses meet billowing blouses across a largely pastel color story, while military-style adornments offer a soft critique of traditional stereotypes.
With collaboration weaved deeply into its seams, LOVERBOY’s SS23 video presentation calls on a myriad of creative minds, including dance-pop duo Nimmo (whose track “Company” provides an exquisite backdrop to the visual), stylist Matthew Josephs, director Bunny Kinney, set designer Jack Davey and movement director Kate Coyne, among others.
“For SS23, the notion of LOVERBOY as a collective of talented artists and designers has only grown stronger,” said creative director Charles Jeffrey. “Together we have created a collection that reflects a shared interest in creating healthy safe spaces for queer people. Having grown and morphed over the years, LOVERBOY continues to thrive, and we hope that this collection reflects our ethos of uncompromising self-expression.”
