Elton John spots Kate Garraway and husband Derek in audience and serenades them

Kate Garraway and her husband Derek Draper were at London’s 02 Arena on Monday night to watch Elton John belt out hits as part of his Farewell tour.

Incredibly, Elton, 76, spotted 55-year-old Kate and her husband, also 55, in the audience and dedicated a poignant song to the couple.

The Good Morning Britain presenter has been caring for her sick spouse since he contracted a severe case of coronavirus in 2020 and they no doubt enjoyed a rare night on the town together.

Not only did Elton dedicate his ballad Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me to Kate and Derek, but he also gave them a shoutout.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, presenter Richard Arnold relayed the story to the show’s viewers, saying: ‘Our very own Kate Garraway and Derek were serenaded last night by none other than Sir Elton John himself.’

Richard, 53, went on: ‘He spied them in the audience at The O2 and dedicated the track Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me to them, telling the rest of the arena how he thrilled he was, calling them an inspiring couple.’

He concluded: ‘It’s lovely to see them out and about because of course as we know it’s quite the feat so it’s wonderful that they got to share that moment together.’

Even GMB host Susanna Reid was moved by the story, telling Richard: ‘That is so emotional.

‘What a beautiful song to pay tribute. Well done Elton, you’re a superstar.’

We second that!

Kate has been battling to find a cure for her husband’s illness and regularly keeps fans updated with his progress.

Doting mum Kate married the former journalist and psychologist in 2005 and shares two children with him – Darcey and William.

Last month, she uploaded a photo of her husband and his first carer Jake on social media, explaining in the caption that she was keen to promote Jake’s musical talent.

Kate wrote: ‘Many of you will remember Jake who cared for Derek when he first came out of hospital in April 21 – from the documentary #caringforderek , so you will know what a wonderful healthcare professional he is.

‘But have just found out he’s also an amazing musician – under the name @sencymiller.x

‘He’s just released a song called #okukuseku (check it out in his bio) – which no surprise is full of love & inspiration to keep going & never give up.

‘The world of carers never fails to surprise me with their depths of talent, thoughtfulness and motivation #happyfriday all! [sic]’.
