Sofia Vergara has transformed into Colombian drug cartel leader Griselda Blanco for an exciting new Netflix series.

We’re used to seeing Sofia in more light-hearted content – most famously she played Gloria in Modern Family for 11 years – but her latest project shows another aspect of her acting talent.

The 51-year-old will be taking on a real person, who was known as the Cocaine Godmother which gives a strong indication of her personality.

In the short trailer, released ahead of its arrival on the streaming platform in January, Blanco is commanding the attention of a room filled with men.

‘You’ve been thinking about me a lot,’ she told them.

‘I’ve heard that you liked my product. We can make a lot of money together.’

As the trailer progresses, we see drugs being packaged but only hear the voice of Blanco.

When one person asked: ‘Who is the one in charge?’ it finally panned to Blanco, giving us our first glimpse of Sofia in character while creepy music played in the background.

While we’re used to seeing Sofia with a big, bouncy blowdry, her hair is worn much shorter and curlier, and her stern face has been covered in cuts, showing the brutal nature of her job as a hardened criminal. The transformation doesn’t come easy with Sofia previously revealing that she spent two hours in the makeup chair every day.

Netflix teased the upcoming limited series: ‘La Jefa is coming. Sofia Vergara transforms in this series, inspired by Griselda Blanco, a woman who rose from obscurity to become ‘the Godmother’ of the underworld.’

‘Witness her lethal blend of charm and ruthlessness in this captivating series,’ they concluded.

The episodes, which come from the same creators and executive producers behind Narcos and Narcos: Mexico, will show Blanco’s reign of terror from the 1970s. At one point, Blanco is thought to have earned around $80 million every month.

In 1995, the mum-of-four was imprisoned and pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder in 1998.

After serving ten years of her 20-year sentence Blanco, who was also known as The Black Widow after killing her second husband, was released and lived a quieter life, but was assassinated in 2012 aged 69 after leaving a butcher’s shop.

Also, starring in the bilingual small-screen production are Alberto Guerra as Dario, Alberto Ammann as Alberto Bravo, Christian Tappan as Arturo and Vanessa Ferlito as Isabel.

Sofía recently admitted she had seen a ‘lot of changes’ in her life.

‘A lot of changes, a lot of good and craziness and bad things happen and good things happen,’ she told Entertainment Tonight.

Earlier this year, she split from her husband Joe Manganiello after seven years of marriage.

Griselda is released January 25 on Netflix.
