American Ballet Theater, Mark Morris Dance Group and dancers from New York City Ballet and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will headline Kaatsbaan Cultural Park’s follow up to its successful inaugural performance festival last summer. Kaatsbaan, which occupies 153 acres in Tivoli, N.Y., will present outdoor performances, concerts and panels in May, the arts organization announced on Monday.
“Spring always has that feeling of hope and rejuvenation,” Stella Abrera, Kaatsbaan’s artistic director and a former principal dancer at Ballet Theater, said: “After everything we’ve been through — and we all know that the winter will be a tough road to travel — I think to come here and experience the art that we will present will uplift everyone’s spirits.”
The programming of the festival, May 20-23 and May 27-30, has been expanded to include music, poetry and the culinary arts. Oliver Ray, a poet and guitarist known for his work with Patti Smith, will lead a program that combines his two specialties; and Jeff Gordinier, the food and drinks editor at Esquire and a former staff writer at The New York Times, will moderate round table discussions about the Hudson Valley’s food scene and foraging, an increasingly popular pastime in the area.
The pianist Hunter Noack will also bring his “In A Landscape” series of outdoor performance set in picturesque locations to the park this spring. Dances, probably solos and duets, will be commissioned to accompany his music.
“Our goal is to be diverse and inclusive of all art forms,” Sonja Kostich, Kaatsbaan’s executive director, said in an interview. “Historically Kaatsbaan has focused primarily on dance but our hope is that we open up to a wider demographic of audience.”
