Kate Middleton may be the Duchess of Cambridge, but when it comes to making special birthday memories for her three children — she’s really just like any other mama. Middleton opened up about the tradition she upholds year after year for her kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis while making an appearance on the A Berry Royal Christmas on the BBC. And it’s as sweet as it is ordinary: She loves making homemade birthday cakes for her wee ones, even if it keeps her up late into the night.
“I love making the cake,” the duchess told The Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry on the program. According to Hello!, “It’s become a bit of a tradition that I stay up ’til midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing and I make far too much. But I love it.”

And it’s not just the royal mama who cherishes the tradition when enjoying family life outside the public eye — but the younger generation too. She even revealed that one of her youngest child’s first words was connected to baking.
“One of Louis’ first words was Mary because right at his height are all my cooking books in the kitchen bookshelf,” she said, according to the BBC. “And children are really fascinated by faces, and your faces are all over your cooking books and he would say ‘That’s Mary Berry.’”
