Adding to its efforts to become carbon neutral by 2045, the Los Angeles County’s City Council has passed a motion to ban most residential and commercial gas appliances. Despite its benefits for sustainability statewide, the move could be extremely detrimental to the Los Angeles food scene.
More specifically Asian restaurants as many of Asia’s cuisines traditionally utilize natural gas stoves, grills and more. Simply, electric heating sources do not provide the same quality of heat integral to cooking the food of Asian cuisines. An example many are pointing out are the Korean barbeque restaurants of L.A.’s Koreatown, many of which would need to figure out how to continue to serve its usual offerings.
