Matthieu Blazy has big boots to fill at Bottega Veneta, and luckily, his collection for Winter 2022 didn’t fall short. Yesterday, the house released its Winter 2022 campaign — a series of snapshots, films and vignettes that capture the spirit of Blazy’s Bottega, it being one that puts a focus on elevating traditions, or as the Creative Director put it, “It is style over fashion in its timelessness. That is part of its quiet power.” Now, Bottega Veneta has released the seasonal collection, and it’s just as good IRL and online as it was on the runway.
Standout pieces include the trompe-l’œil-informed leather accouterments, namely printed leather trousers to look like jeans and the complementing printed leather pinstripe shirt, with the latter featuring meticulous detailing on the oversized chest patch pocket. This comes as no surprise as Bottega Veneta has its roots in leatherwork. Still, for this season the material informs so much more than just bags and shoes, elevating even the most proletariat of uniforms (à la this blue-collar jeans-shirt combo).
As seen on the runway, a new Squid Mule makes its debut with a tubular take on Bottega Veneta’s now-signature Intreccio weave, while moving away from leather we find jeans — actually made from denim, this time — that act as a more affordable alternative to the label’s luxe leather rendition.
Cone wraparound sunglasses play on current eyewear trends and are sure to be a big hit this season alongside Blazy’s pillow pouch bags and reworked Lug boot, while essentials like a tank top and wide leg pants — crafted in fine wool — are fit for that elevated appeal.
Altogether, Blazy’s Bottega echoes what Daniel Lee had created for the brand, which comes as no shock seeing the former sat underneath the latter before the Creative Director shift. What Blazy has done here is continue the brand’s newfound and much-loved aesthetic, while injecting his own sensibilities — an aesthetic that he himself adheres to, nothing over the top or branded per the Bottega ethos, but identifiably more than your regular pair of trousers, leather jacket or boots.
Take a look at a handful of garments and looks above, and find the entire Winter 2022 collection online or in Bottega Veneta’s boutiques now.
