MM6 Maison Margiela Makes Quietly Subversive Clothes for Pre-Fall 2023

For Pre-Fall 2023, MM6 Maison Margiela considers a theme of sartorial mundanity, tweaking staples from the everyday wardrobe with subtle-yet-disruptive design codes. The result is a serving of thoughtful takes on ordinary silhouettes, or in the brand’s words, “quietly particular clothes for quietly particular people.”

Commonplace clothing categories are adjusted and refined, with tailoring that thinks outside of the normal scope. Wide-legged trousers are made with iridescent acetate jerseys, a textile normally found in athletic tracksuits, and a notch-lapel pinstripe jacket is pumped with padding, tip-toeing into outerwear. Hooded velour track tops are made small, hugging the human form, and oversized leather shirts would have no problem acting as overcoats in colder weather.

This season’s trompe l’oeil iterations are a true testament to the brand’s subtle experimentation. At first glance, seemingly layered ensembles appear aptly styled; but upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that the brand has distilled multiple separates into singular pieces. Sleek trousers are combined with frayed denim shorts, while shirts, T-shirts and pullovers all meld into one.

Denim is washed in faded blue and streaked black, some with crease treatments and some without. Patent leather, in brown, commands a matching jacket and pants set, and faux leather dominates an oversized coat. In contrast, large bomber jackets appear next to slim-fitting coats, and baggy jeans enter alongside A-line skirts.

In its third collaboration with Salomon, MM6 Maison Margiela revealed a new sneaker, based on the French sports brand’s ACS running shoe, that comes in white, black and blue colorways. Additionally, a heightened version of the Cross High sneaker comes in two new colorways: umber brown and denim blue.
