“Something in the Water is back in the 757 for 2023,” Pharrell said in the caption of a recent Instagram post — confirming that his annual festival would return to Virginia Beach next year.
Pharrell has been holding “Something in the Water” in Virginia Beach since 2019, save for 2021 when it was moved to Washington, D.C. as Pharrell protested against the killing of his cousin by Virginia Beach police. Past iterations of the festival have featured N.E.R.D., SZA, Justin Timberlake, Tyler, the Creator and even a reunion of Pharrell’s Virginia Beach brethren the Clipse. The 2023 fest’s lineup has yet to be announced.
The festival has served as an economic boon for Virginia Beach, been lauded by local leaders and news outlets and helped the community wash away the stigma of “College Beach Weekend,” an unofficial annual celebration that had often correlated with a spike in crime rates. In 2019, ahead of the first SITW festival, Pharrell mentioned that it was named as such because he frequently heard how “great” people from the area are and that it “must be something in the water.”
