It looks like another Quake remaster is on the way and may be a prelude to a brand new mainline entry from the makers of Wolfenstein.
Perhaps one of the most promising things about the Xbox Games Showcase is how many games and developers weren’t featured, thereby proving that Microsoft has plenty left in reserve to reveal later.
Two of the most notable absences were Bethesda studios id Software and MachineGames, neither of which has shown anything new for several years now.
Wolfenstein developer MachineGames is known to be working on an Indiana Jones game but that’s never shown beyond a brief teaser trailer. However, both studios have been connected with rumours of a Quake reboot and now a second remaster has been revealed by the South Korean age rating board.
Once a country lists a game for release it usually means it’s quite imminent and there’s also no chance of it being a fake leak.
Considering QuakeCon is coming up on August 10 it seems almost certain that’s when it will be announced officially – since that’s exactly what happened with the first Quake remaster, which was also leaked by the same rating board.
Quake 2 was originally released in 1997 and apart from a few of the weapons it had nothing whatsoever to do with the original, switching the original Lovecraftian setting for a more generic sci-fi theme.
Rumours of a Quake reboot, involving MachineGames and/or id Software have been going around for years now, especially after MachineGames contributed two new mission packs to the first Quake remaster.
It’s never been clear if the new game would be based more on Quake 1 or 2 but while a recent job listing at MachineGames was initially thought to be referring to a new Wolfenstein game, it could instead relate to a new Quake.
A subsequent rumour also suggested that the game in question was not Wolfenstein 3, although it didn’t indicate what it actually was.
Without further information it’s impossible to know exactly what’s going on but some kind of new Quake does seem well overdue, given the original was one of the first ever fully 3D first person shooters and a seminal release in terms of online multiplayer.
